Former THS graduates:
Dr. Sam Barnes –Dr. Barnes was a graduate of the class of 1930 and went on to the University of Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1936. He completed his residency in Houston and came home to open his practice in 1938. From 1942-46, he served in the US Marine Corp. After leaving the Marine Corp, he did an additional surgical residency in Houston and came back to Trinity to reopen his practice in 1947. He retired in 1981 after 43 years of medical practice. He served on the city council and served as mayor from 1982-1992. He and his wife were co-recipients of Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge’s George Washington medal for lifelong public service in 1995.
Former District Attorney Joe Lynn Price: Joe Lynn grew up in Trinity and graduated in 1962. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Sam Houston State University in government in 1966 and went on to earn his law degree from Baylor College of Law in 1969. After graduation, he returned to Trinity and opened up his law practice. In 1977, he became the District Attorney for the 258th Judicial District and maintained that position until his untimely death in 2003. He was a member of the Trinity County Go Texan Committee, on the board of the Trinity Scholarship fund, and was an active supporter of local youth through both the Trinity County Fair and Trinity community Fair. Also, he helped found and was a member of the board for Kalin’s House Child Advocacy Center. Joe Lynn always preached, “School is what you make of it”. He had a compassion for people in need whether he was supporting local students showing their prized animals or visiting with a family member of a murder victim.
Former Judge John Martin: John Martin, a 1955 Trinity graduate attended Texas A&M on a football scholarship and earned his Doctorate of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law in 1972. He practiced law in Conroe until 1981 when he took the bench as a Texas State District Judge, presiding over the 2nd 9th District Court including Trinity, Montgomery, Polk and San Jacinto counties. He retired from the Court in 1996, but continued to serve as a senior district judge until his death in 2000. He always told everyone that all of his success could be traced directly to his teachers and coaches at Trinity High School. He learned so much about life, perseverance, winning and losing on the fields of competition at his beloved school.
Jesse “Butch” Gibson: Butch Gibson was a 1963 graduate of THS. He played all sports at THS and in his senior year was elected Mr. THS. He graduated from SHSU with a degree in Business Administration. He worked at various businesses in Trinity and for an oil and gas company until he became President/CEO of First National Bank of Trinity until his death in 2013. He had over 30 years serving with three organizations dear to his heart: Trinity Volunteer Fire Department, Trinity Lion’s Club, and Trinity Community Fair Association. Butch also served the Trinity city council, Trinity County Appraisal District board, longtime member of the Chamber of Commerce, Athletic Booster Club and past member of the Lansberry Elementary site based committee.
Former administrators of Trinity ISD:
Royce L Burton: Royce Burton was superintendent at Trinity ISD from 1959 until his retirement in 1976. He grew up in Houston and graduated from Rice University with a bachelor’s degree and received his master’s degree from University of Houston. Mr. Burton along with Dr. Calvin Franklin was instrumental in the smooth transition during the successful integration of TISD. Also, during his tenure, classrooms and a shop for Ag Science and for Consumer Science were built. Mr. Burton was loved and respected by the staff and community.
Mr. J. F. Holt: Mr. Holt grew up and graduated from Flat High School in Flat, Texas—a small town near Waco. From 1946-1949 he served in the US Army Air Corp and was stationed in occupied Japan. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Texas State University in San Marcos. He received his superintendent’s certification from Texas A&M. He taught in Edna and was principal at Dripping Springs High School before coming to Trinity. He was principal at Trinity High School from 1965 until 1976 and then moved up to serve as superintendent from 1978-1988 and then became part time business manager until 1992 when he retired. The students and staff at Trinity ISD all loved him and to this day like to tell “Mr. Holt” stories.
Dr. Calvin Franklin: Dr. Franklin graduated with bachelor and masters, and doctorate from Prairie View University and Texas Southern University. He became principal of Trinity Negro High School in 1961 until 1970 when he became principal and curriculum coordinator at Trinity Intermediate School—Westside campus. In 1976, he became principal of Lansberry Elementary until he died in 1977. Dr. Franklin was instrumental in the smooth transition during the successful integration of TISD. Dr. Franklin was a well liked and respected by everyone in our community.

Maud Frazier: Maude Frazier grew up in Woodville, Texas and graduated from Woodville High School. He went to college at PrarieView A&M and graduated in 1949. He taught Ag Science at Newton High School for several years and was drafted in 1952 in the US Marine Corp. After serving two years in the Marine Corp, he became the Ag Science teacher at Trinity High School from 1961 until he retired in 1987. Most every student that came through Trinity High School will tell you that he was one of their favorite teachers.
Coach Randall Leggett: Coach Leggett grew up in Trinity and graduated from Trinity High School in 1955. He received a football scholarship to Rice University and later transferred to SHSU earning his Bachelor of Science degree. His first coaching job was in Livingston where he remained until coming home to Trinity in 1976 as head coach. He touched many lives during his coaching and teaching career. He retired in 1992. His honesty, integrity, and discipline guided many students.
Dan Spearman: Dan was born and raised in Midlothian, Texas. He graduated from SHSU with a bachelor’s and master’s degree. He taught Ag Science at Trinity High School from 1970 until 1979. Dan served on the TISD board of trustees for 7 years and was president of the board during the construction of the present Trinity High School campus and renovation of the elementary and middle school campuses. Also, Dan was a member of the Trinity Fair Association for 20 years and served 8 years as their president. Currently, Dan is serving as chairman of the First United Methodist Church council.
We are pleased and excited to honor those who are outstanding examples of service and dedication to our community. These recipients of our Wall of Honor award will serve as an inspiration to all who view their pictures on display in the Wall of Honor Hall of Trinity High School.
