Section 125/Cafeteria Plans
The Section 124/Cafeteria Plan refers to Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1978. Simply put, the Cafeteria Plan allows you to deduct certain benefit premiums from your gross earnings, before federal withholding taxes are figured. The amount you elect to have deducted "pre-tax" actually lowers your taxable income.
There are two very important issues to keep in mind regarding Cafeteria plans:
- Although all coverage is voluntary, every employee is required to a sign a Section 125 Election Form, even if no benefits are selected, or if you wish to keep your current benefits the same.
- Any "pre-tax" elections will remain in effect and cannot be changed during the plan year unless you have one of the following changes in status:
- Marriage or Divorce
- Birth, Adoption, or Death
- Change in Spouse's Employment
- Change in the Eligibility Status of a Dependent
- Substantial Increase in Premium and Coverage Elsewhere
Trinity ISD policy states that you have 31 days from the date of a qualifying event to complete proper documentation and return it to the Human Resources department. Written evidence of the qualifying event is required. This includes adding new coverage and dropping, increasing, or decreasing existing coverage.
The annual enrollment period will take place at approximately the same time each year. Benefit Education meetings are held on each campus prior to enrollment. The open enrollment period for the 19-20 school year will be July 1, 2019 thru August 23, 2019.
